George E. Pierce

Western Reserve College President George E. Pierce (presidency years: 1834鈥1855) continued Charles B. Storrs鈥 expansion of the Hudson, Ohio, campus through efforts such as creating the college鈥檚 first medical department as well as what is now Western Reserve Academy鈥檚 Loomis Observatory.

However, the college鈥檚 financial struggles that came with such growth would mark his presidency, and cuts were made鈥攊ncluding to the theology department where he, a Presbyterian minister, worked.

The Pierce House residence hall was named in his honor.
