Instruction modes designate how courses are intended to be delivered and must be made known to students prior to registration. This information, provided through the Student Information System, allows students to ensure that their learning goals and schedules are aligned, and enables the university to maintain accurate records to meet compliance and regulatory requirements.
Fall 2025 and forward
Distance, Total (DT) - Courses in which all contact hours for each student are delivered through remote (synchronous and/or asynchronous) instruction.
Hybrid/Hyflex (HY) - Courses in which a portion of the contact hours are delivered or made available through remote (synchronous and/or asynchronous) instruction.
In Person, Traditional (P) - Courses in which all contact hours for each student are delivered in person, usually on a regular schedule.
Individualized Study (IS) - Individualized study where instruction occurs as arranged (e.g., independent study, research courses, dissertation, thesis, co-op, practicum).
Please note:
- Updates to instruction mode should not be made once the semester is underway, unless it is anticipated that more than half of the course's contact hours will be altered.
- Minor shifts (e.g, teaching an in-person class online for a few days due to unforeseen circumstances) do not necessitate a change to instruction mode.
- Faculty members teaching P or HY courses who receive permission for students to take the whole class via remote learning should open a separate DT section of their course for those remote students.
- Students should be aware of how remote courses will count towards compliance with visa restrictions for online learning.

- In Person, Traditional (P) - Courses in which instructional contact hours for each student are delivered in-person, usually on a regular schedule.
- Individualized Study (IS) - Individualized study where instruction occurs as arranged (e.g., independent study, research courses, dissertation, thesis, co-op, practicum).

- Remote-Synchronous (Emergency) (E1) - Courses normally taught in person, but due to emergency, instructional contact hours for each student are delivered in 100% remote format, with the majority delivered synchronously. Students are expected to attend synchronous meetings at designated days and times.
