David L. Hussey is an associate professor at the Mandel School and director of the Mandel Leadership Fellows Program. He also serves as associate director for research at the Begun Center for Violence Prevention Research and Education, co-chair of the school鈥檚 curriculum committee and chair of the Mental Health path of study. From 1999 to 2012, he served on the faculty at Kent State University, where he was a founding faculty member of the College of Public Health.

Hussey鈥檚 research focuses on mental health, substance use, and trauma and violence. He brings more than 45 years of clinical experience across health, mental health, substance use and child welfare settings, and has designed and led numerous innovative treatment programs. He is a member of the National Association of Social Workers' ATOD Specialty Practice Section and co-principal investigator for the OhioMHAS Substance Use Disorder Center of Excellence. He also co-directs Core D: Clinical and Behavioral Services at the NIDA-funded Center for Excellence on the Impact of Substance Abuse on HIV at MetroHealth in Cleveland.

Why I Teach

I'm honored and deeply committed to preparing the next generation of clinical social workers by teaching them the most effective clinical methods and strategies to treat mental health and substance use disorders. I have one of the most fulfilling jobs one can ever imagine because I teach and mentor incredibly talented and idealistic young people in their journey to help build a better world.
