The Social Justice Institute (SJI) invites CWRU undergraduate first, second, and third year students to apply to the Social Justice Scholars (SJS) reading group. Apply by Friday, May 23.
In Fall 2025, selected participants will be responsible for completing assigned readings and participating in each of the five sessions (dates below). In consideration of full participation, each Social Justice Scholar will receive a $250 award. Social Justice Scholars agree to be responsible for reading all of the assigned materials, and must attend ALL five discussion sessions. Fall participants can apply to continue as a Social Justice Scholar during the Spring semester (with an additional stipend). Our work in the Spring will build upon learning completed during the Fall semester.
Scholars sessions are led by Professor Ayesha Bell Hardaway. We are honored to have Keith Lamar join Professor Hardaway as a co-facilitator for the Fall 2025 Social Justice Scholars program. Mr. Lamar is an award-winning author, teacher, artist, poet, and activist who has spent the past 31 years fighting a wrongful conviction that currently has him on Ohio's death row. Living in solitary confinement on death row, Mr. Lamar has co-taught classes at Youngstown State University, published his memoir Condemned, recorded albums, and so much more.
The five sessions will be held during the Community Hour (12:30pm to 2:00pm) on:
- Friday, September 5
- Friday, September 19
- Friday, October 3
